Talbot CARES Partners with SaveHeart for AED Enclosures

Founded in 1661, and home to over 37,500 people, Talbot County is located on Maryland’s beautiful eastern shore region. Its 600 miles of shoreline and charming towns of Easton, Oxford, Queen Anne, St. Michaels and Trappe also attract thousands of visitors every year. Talbot County has been a pioneer and national leader for decades in protecting its citizens and visitors from sudden cardiac arrest), as evidenced by their management of over 250 AEDs throughout the county in both indoor and outdoor locales. SaveHeart by HeartNation is truly honored to be named as the Talbot CARES (Cardiac Arrest Rescue-Emergency Station) Outdoor AED Cabinet program partner in expanding lifesaving AED coverage for Talbot County residents and visitors alike.

Talbot County Deploys Additional Outdoor AEDs Throughout County

With over 250 AEDs deployed in Talbot County already, focus has shifted to enhance and expand AED coverage outdoors throughout several parks, trails, schools, athletic facilities, marinas and other outdoor locations.  Saving lives from sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) requires immediate access to working AEDs – with the chances of survival decreasing rapidly with every passing minute without a shock from an AED.

As a result of the efforts of the Talbot Paramedic Foundation and Team Trace, who together have been championing the Talbot CARES (Cardiac Arrest Rescue and Emergency Station) program for decades, we are pleased to share that AED solutions will now be deployed in outdoor locales in all five major towns and other parts of the county.

SCA: A Public Health Crisis and a Serial Killer

SCA kills nearly 400,000 Americans each year (>1,000 people/day), striking without warning and often without regard to age, sex, ethnicity, and even health profile. Sadly, today less than 10% of out-of-hospital SCA victims survive, largely because AEDs aren’t available when & where needed.

Time is of the Essence

As heroic and dedicated as our first responders are, national emergency response times to arrive on scene range between 7-12 minutes – often too late for SCA victims. And while cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help ‘buy time,’ the only real cure for SCA is an immediate shock from an AED, which the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends within 3 minutes of an event.

Improving SCA survival rates, therefore, requires placing many more AEDs, including outside – where an estimated 15% of SCA events occur – AND immediate action by lay responders before paramedics arrive on scene.

SaveHeart is a Proud Partner of Talbot Cares

SaveHeart’s highly visible, publicly accessible, temperature controlled, and monitored ‘smart’ cabinets and outdoor enclosures are now being deployed throughout the county. Talbot County’s long-standing focus on public safety and public access AEDs is exemplary, as its program includes AEDs placed indoors, outside, and even in police cars.   With this expansion of the Talbot CARES program to place AEDs throughout all major public outdoor areas, an SCA victim’s chances of survival will increase exponentially.
